Productivity Basis for the “Worldwide Construction Labor Productivity” Book
The Productivity Basis of one hundred percent (100%) used in the book means the direct construction field labor workforce which produces 42 minutes of productive work out of each hour for a construction project having the following major characteristics:
- Grass Roots Chemical Processing Industry (CPI) processing facility using a proven design with one process train constructed in the U.S. Gulf Coast area
- USGC workforce supervised by an international contractor
- Non-Unionized direct hire workforce recruited from one local area labor pool near construction site
- Workforce having between 10 and 15 years construction experience
- Five day workweek, an eight-hour workday, and one shift per day
- Total direct field labor construction effort of approximately 100,000 USGC manhours
- Contiguous construction schedule after mobilization and prior to demobilization and start-up of 32 to 60 weeks
- Construction management performed by an independent firm for owner
- Prime Contractor having a backlog of less than three months work
- Prime Contractor has successfully completed previous projects for owner
- Fixed Price contract and no other work being performed by contractor near construction site
- All engineering work completed prior to the start of construction
- Quality of workforce supervision is good
- Moderate or low level of construction activity near the construction site during the construction period
- No construction work performed in operating areas
- No construction work performed wearing special safety clothing
- No strikes, labor disputes, or other outages or stoppages during construction
- No delays in delivery of long lead items
- No catering or accommodation provided for workforce
- Less than one hour one way travel time from labor market to construction site
- No comingling of materials for owner or other construction projects in laydown area
- No workforce congestion during construction
- Good workforce morale
- Optimum crew loading
- No other contractors or subcontractors working at the construction site
- No other facilities being constructed at or near the construction the site for the owner
- 24/7 Construction site security and fenced laydown area adjacent to work area
All construction field labor productivities in the book have been “normalized” to the U.S. Gulf Coast (an area where a great deal of construction of facilities in the Chemical Processing Industry (CPI) have occurred).
